The City of Turku has opened the first official mobility point in Pääskyvuori. At the mobility hub, city residents can easily change from one mode of transport to another. There you can find Föli buses, city bikes and shared bicycles.

The Mobility Hub Makes Everyday Travel Easier

A mobility hub is an umbrella term for a transportation node. It is a place that enables smooth transfers between different modes of transport. A mobility hub can, for example, make it easy to continue a journey with a city bike or a shared cargo bike after getting off the bus. When different transport options are available in the same location, combining various modes of travel becomes effortless.

With the services offered at a mobility hub, you can, for instance, handle daycare drop-offs, grocery shopping, and commuting by flexibly using different types of transportation together.

– When mobility services are easily accessible and suit different life situations, more people can choose a bike or bus instead of a private car. A cargo bike can be an excellent option since it can carry both large purchases and children. The bikes are equipped with seat belts for children, explains project coordinator Oona Uusitalo.

Turku already has places where different transport modes intersect, but the Pääskyvuori mobility hub is the city's first intentionally designed and implemented comprehensive solution where services support each other. The bus stop, city bikes, and shared cargo bikes have been brought together to form a functional and seamless whole – just as the concept of a mobility hub intends.

The Mobility Hub Includes:

  • Föli bus stop (837 Kotkankatu)
  • Fölläri bikes
  • Shared cargo bikes

How to Use the Services at the Mobility Hub

Buses: you can travel by bus by paying with contactless payment, a Föli travel card, the Föli app, or cash. You can check bus schedules and routes at reittiopas.foli.fi or in the Föli app.

Fölläri bikes can be rented via the Donkey Republic app. Through the app, you can find an available bike, rent it, unlock it, and start riding. If you have a Föli season card (valid for at least 30 days), you can use a fölläri for free for one hour at a time, but you still need to enter your payment card information in the app. The bike must be returned to a fölläri bike station after use, and you can find the station locations in the app.

Cargo bikes can be rented the same way as fölläri bokes. The cargo bikes are also found in the Donkey Republic app, and electric cargo bikes are marked with a lightning symbol. If you're not familiar with cargo bikes, it's a good idea to take a short test ride without any load before setting off properly. The cargo bike must be returned to a designated cargo bike station after use, and the locations can be found in the app.

Users of the mobility hub are encouraged to leave feedback on how it works and what improvements might be needed. Feedback helps to develop the mobility hub and ensures the service meets residents’ needs as well as possible. You can provide feedback by answering this survey: feedback survey. A link and QR code for the survey can also be found on the information sign at the mobility hub.

– With the mobility hub, we want to bring sustainable mobility options closer to everyday needs. This trial gives us the opportunity to collect valuable information on how different services work in practice. User feedback is extremely important to us, says project coordinator Oona Uusitalo.

The mobility hub is part of the international SUMPs for BSR project, which develops sustainable mobility solutions especially for small and medium-sized cities. In the project, Turku is piloting the implementation of a mobility hub and promoting the measurement of walking and cycling as well as engaging residents in mobility planning.
