In primary and secondary schools in Turku, the use of mobile devices is prohibited – also during breaks and during meals.

Pupils must keep their phones in a backpack or locked locker throughout the school day, including during breaks. If mobile devices are used without permission, they can be confiscated for the rest of the day.

The background is an amendment to the Basic Education Act, which aims to ensure that every child and young person can focus on learning and have peace and quiet to work. The amended Act entered into force on 1 August 2025.
