Street works in the Port of Turku are expanding to the northern part of the project area, where new access routes to the port are being built. Tuontikatu will be temporarily closed to vehicles under the Pahaniemi bridge between Vientiväylä–Tuontiväylä 28 April–23 August 2026.
Tuontikatu is a busy street, and the closure will particularly affect traffic heading towards Ruissalo and the harbour. Traffic heading towards Ruissalo and the West Harbour will in future be diverted via Tuontiväylä, and Vientiväylä will remain connected to Vuoksenniskankatu. Buses and taxis will also use diversion routes. The combined pedestrian and cycle path will continue to run next to the worksite under the Pahaniemi bridge as before.
The new traffic arrangements will be introduced on Tuesday 28 April. Some preparatory work will already be carried out during week 17. Closing the street will make it possible to carry out the work in the area more efficiently and safely.
In connection with the closure, a temporary roundabout will be built on Pansiontie at the junctions of Vientiväylä and Tuontiväylä. Before the roundabout, traffic will be directed into a single lane.
– The temporary arrangements are designed to keep traffic flowing as smoothly as possible during the construction works. People moving in the area should be prepared for changes and follow the signage, says Project Director Antero Mäkilä from the City of Turku.
Construction works on Pansiontie, Tuontikatu, Tuontiväylä and Vientiväylä will continue in phases until the end of 2027. As the work progresses, traffic arrangements will be updated, and future changes will be communicated separately before they are introduced.
The works are part of the City of Turku's project to develop the surroundings of the renewing passenger harbour and the harbour street network. Traffic arrangements in the harbour area will be renewed in phases during 2026–2028 so that the area can serve growing passenger and freight traffic volumes. The aim of the improvements is to make harbour traffic smoother, improve traffic safety and support the development of the Linnakaupunki area as part of central Turku.
