Situations requiring preparedness include longer-term interruptions in the distribution of electricity or water, disruptions in online or banking services, longer-term crisis situations such as the pandemic or wars, and climate-related crisis situations, such as storms or floods.
The authorities’ preparedness for crisis and disruptions is guided by legislation. Planning is guided by national and regional decisions and guidelines.
Household preparedness
In addition to the state, city and other authorities, it is important for city residents to prepare for various potential crisis situations in advance.
Households should always have a home reserve, i.e. water, food and other essential needs for at least three days.
Home emergency supplies checklist:
- Enough ready-to-eat food
- Clean water (2 litres per day per person)
- Essential medicines
- Radio operating on batteries or otherwise without mains power
- Flashlight operating on batteries or otherwise without mains electricity
- Back-up power supply and batteries
- Clean containers with lids for water storage
- Wet wipes and hand sanitiser
- A small amount of cash
- Iodine tablets as recommended
- Duct tape
In addition to having emergency supplies, preparedness also means knowledge and the ability to act if something exceptional happens. You should consider in advance what potential crisis situations may occur so that you can act in case of something happens.
The Ministry of the Interior has compiled comprehensive preparedness instructions for various exceptional situations on the Suomi.fi website. In addition to instructions, the guide also contains information on hybrid and information influencing.
