Aninkainen is one of the key areas in the development of Turku city centre. For example, a multifunctional transport hub is planned, combining railway services, long-distance buses and local transport.

Many visitors arrive in Turku via the Aninkainen area and its public transport stations. In the future, the area from Puutori to the railway station will develop not only as a multifunctional centre for transport and logistics, but also as a hub for services and leisure activities. The changes will link the Aninkainen area more closely to the city centre and nearby activities.

The most central and ambitious project in the area is the high-end transport hub at its heart. In addition, the development of Aninkainen is closely linked to the planning of the surroundings of Puutori and the Concert Hall, the renovation of the Parkki field area and the development of the Turku rail yard area and its surroundings.

Projects located in Aninkainen include The Transport Hub, the Turku Rail Yard project, the Fabriikki area, the reorganisation of the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency’s rail yard operations, the LogoHub parking facility, the Parkki field, Puutori, the Aninkainen Concert Hall and the Vocational Institute quarter, the plans for a tramway route through the area. The future development of the area is also affected by the progress of the West Railway and the Commuter Train to Southwest Finland project.

The transport hub as the centre of services in the area

The new transport hub, located on the site of the current bus station, will become a comprehensive public transport hub where tourists can easily change from one mode of transport to another.

The decision has been made to locate the transport hub in Aninkainen, as the majority of regional and long-distance public transport, both buses and trains, pass through the area. The West Railway and possible local train services could further increase the number of train users.

The good accessibility of Aninkainen by public transport also offers excellent opportunities for a variety of public and private services to be located in the area. With new homes and the growth in the population in the area, the demand for shops and services will only increase. These services are also to be provided in the transport hub, which, alongside the transport terminals, is planned to be an inviting and multifunctional neighbourhood hub.

According to preliminary plans, the transport hub should be completed by the turn of the decade.

New functions in the Concert Hall Quarter

In the quarter of the current concert hall, a planning process based on the “Agora” competition proposal has been launched together with the winner of the competition. The proposal will preserve the concert hall and other buildings marked as protected in the draft of the local detailed plan.

The future activities and operator of the Concert Hall are still to be decided. The proposal envisions using the location as a multi-purpose sports and cultural centre for children and young people. The quarter is also designated for residential buildings.

The idea is to create a new semi-public square and access from Aninkaistenkatu to Parkinkentä through the quarter. The Parkki field area will be redeveloped with new sports facilities and new buildings will be built on the edge of the field.
